Literacy Crisis
Reading Helps You Grow
Over 60% of Americans face literacy challenges, significantly affecting health and income, highlighting the need for educational reform.
The nation is in the throes of a decades-long literacy crisis. More than 60 percent of U.S. students are incapable of reading at their grade level and adults fare no better. The Barbara Bush Foundation reports that 60 percent of those between 16 and 74 are unable to read at a sixth-grade level.

In creating Gordon Philanthropies, Inc. (GP), I was guided by a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunities I have enjoyed in my life, gratitude for the gifts that I have been given and for the rewards that I have earned. It is not possible, though, to be grateful without recognizing those who have not shared the same access to opportunities that I have enjoyed. Gordon Philanthropies, Inc. was established by Daniel Gordon in 2020 with the mission to create and support educational programs aimed at improving the lives of people living in underserved and under-resourced communities. GP advances its mission through its various programs which are strategically designed to increase students’ reading motivation and access to reading materials.
Fries Avenue STEAM Academy Enjoys Special Screening of The Wild Robot
Members of the production team for DreamWorks Animation’s new hit film The Wild Robot (in theaters now), spoke with more than 100 students from Fries Avenue STEAM Academy Elementary School after a special screening of the film at AMC Burbank 16. The film is based on the beloved, New York Times best-selling book by Peter Brown.

Our reading initiative, “Communities that Read Together, Grow Together” was created to provide quality and accessible book resources to boost the reading skills and cultivate a collective love for reading. By collaborating with community partners, we aim to enhance their students’ quality of life by providing educational equity opportunities.
