Our school-aged literacy program provides students and their parents/caregivers free books throughout the year with the goal of increasing the students’ reading skills.
The literacy program uses the students’ standardized assessment scores as a baseline to determine their reading capacity and Lexile levels. Test scores will be compared one year later to determine how much of an increase in reading skills, if any, was achieved. Students will choose books based on their interests and reading levels.
The aftermath of the pandemic continues to plague the most vulnerable students in educational settings at all grade levels. The most affected students live in impoverished neighborhoods—increasing the already-wide achievement gap. This is why the foundation’s efforts are specifically based on working in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods and with a focused student literacy program for our students in our elementary, middle, and high schools across the county of Los Angeles.
