Celebrating the End of the School Year at Loren Miller Elementary with Books and Cookies Event

The Gordon Philanthropies team had the rewarding experience of seeing Loren Miller students enjoy their new books alongside cookies and juice boxes.

As students eagerly turned the pages and chatted with classmates, the auditorium buzzed with undeniable excitement. It was a moment that captured the essence of what encouraging literacy can bring to young minds: an escape into storytelling that broadens their perspectives and helps them gain confidence in the world.

The event brought teachers, parents, and students together for spirited conversations about their books. Sylvia Beanes, executive director, spoke with animated students who shared their most treasured stories and what those books meant to them.

“The Teachers and Books Program has helped Loren Miller Elementary tremendously because it has incited excitement for reading,” shared Jaza Williams, SSS Counselor. “Amid social media, our brains are inclined to being distracted. And the fact that this program has helped students become excited about books is beyond incredible. I thank Gordon Philanthropies for creating this spectacular program that has encouraged cultivating a passion for reading in our students’ lives.”

“Hearing this kind of excitement from students shows how the Teachers & Books Program not only makes them feel seen and supported, but also helps spark the skills and confidence they need to chase their dreams,” said Beanes.

The goal of the Teachers & Books Program is to inspire a love of reading by giving students access to books they can call their own. In partnership with teachers and families, the program helps children build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and chase their dreams – one story at a time.
